Isabel Allende is a Chilean-American novelist, widely recognized as one of the most successful Spanish-language authors. She was born on August 2, 1942, in Lima, Peru, to Chilean parents. Allende's literary career began with the publication of her first novel, "The House of the Spirits" ("La casa de los espíritus") in 1982.
